Introduction Thread #2

It turns out the Drupal setup for comments per page leaves the maximum at 300, and our original introduction thread exceeded that...so it is time for a new one. :)

Who are you? What do you do?

Hi Raja
I think Drupal and Firefox are both awesome projects to be building...both growing like weeds.

Honestly it is not that hard to get in Wikipedia. You only need a couple press mentions then be critical of the Wikipedia and they list you. ;)

May 11, 2009 - 5:32pm

It is actually pretty easy to get listed in Wikipedia if you...

  • are an online marketer
  • that knows marketing pretty well
  • and who is quite vocal and critical of Wikipedia

;)

Hey Aaron,

I'm Satish, 24 years old and i live near Amsterdam. I met Mike Dammann in Amsterdam who was doing SEO a few years ago, he told me what SEO was and kinda got my attention.

Do you know him? He now lives in Costa Rica as far is i know. Selling houses, since anyone there can sell houses without papers (excluding paper money).

Anyway; I have my own IT business, doing SEO, SEA and Webdesign, I also work for a cool company that advertises alot on the internet and i'm kinda the entrepreneur around the clock.

I have 2 weblog's and a syndication website. I started my first site about 8 years ago, which was a MP3 site and it ran quite well.

I use your site to stay at the top wave of SEO globally. Nothing matches it.

bye,

Satish Binda

Hi Satish
Thanks for the compliment.

Yes I know Mike. In fact he recently interviewed me.

Amsterdam has really yummie fruit yogurt drinks...or did when I was there anyhow. I also liked the Van Gogh museum and the HUGE park there a bunch too. :)

Hi,
My name is Kristina. I own an online lingerie boutique, GigisCloset.com, specializing in high-end intimates. I have owned the store for 3 years. We have incredible merchandise and getting the right traffic is important. My background is in sales and marketing so learning SEO is vital but the learning curve feels like it is straight up sometimes.
I just found your site and you may be my new hero and mentor. I am not a programmer, so some of the info is new and a bit over my head. I am determined to learn what I can. This site and the energy that you put into it is a great gift to all of us trying to achieve our own personal goals outside the "rat race".
Do you have a section for newbies or a progessive list of important tasks for seo?
Best,
Kristina

Hey Aaron,

It's Gab Goldenberg - the guy who's always trying to speak to you on Google Chat! lol ;)

Anyways, I've been doing SEO for a little over two years now, 1.5 professionally. Your book was a huge help and continues to inspire me. The breadcrumb navigation I had done custom (the existing WordPress plugins are out of date/broken/unsupported properly) was because of your book's suggestion.

So things here are good... I spoke at SMX West recently, and got to meet Rand and a whole bunch of the folks I'm always chatting with online, but missed you unfortunately. Besides that, I've gone part time in school this year to do SEO more seriously and am loving it! Hoping to translate some of that money into affiliate sites now...

March 17, 2008 - 10:09pm

Thanks for commenting Gab. Yeah I am a bit burned out on chat devices...plus I was a bit stressed with changing the business model and doing a lot of other stuff recently too. :)

Congrats on speaking so soon. There is lots of money in being one of the speakers if you leverage that. I have landed some HUGE clients that I didn't remember meeting because they met me at a conference.

March 17, 2008 - 10:05pm

Welcome to the site Chuck.
I used to moderate a number of forums when I first broke into the industry. Dabbling around in a few different places is a good way to get more exposure. :)

My biggest tips are generally:

  • participate where you really enjoy participating
  • to stick to sites where they are small enough that you can really break out and get noticed
  • start building up your own site right away such that you can build a bit of a following for when you launch a great idea you have a number of people who will help spread it fast and far

Nice avatar BTW. :)

I think by default Wordpress is faster than Drupal, but Drupal allows you to add in more deeper features for membership type sites and other cool stuff like that.

Hi,

I have a background in IT application development. I also have about 4 years of experience with affiliate marketing(I learnt the basics of PPC, article marketing and press releases promoting products as an affiliate), a niche ebook which ranks number 1 in google for the main keyword and SEO copywriting (I have a side business doing SEO copywriting for clients). I find myself increasingly fascinated with SEO. I have done some SEO for my own sites and I recently completed a course in SEM at an online training institution. The more I learn the more I realize there is to know.

I am now working for a large IT consulting company and I am hoping to introduce and promote SEO services within our organization and in turn to our clients. My challenge is that I need to learn SEO for corporate websites, many of which run on CMS platforms. Most SEO experts seem to have experience with small to medium businesses and I was looking for a membership site where I can learn and discuss SEO for large websites and for specific platforms and content management systems.

Since you, Aaron, are the author of the SEO book and almost synonymous with SEO, I consider you an authority on the subject and I look forward to hearing your thoughts on whether I can find what I am seeking here on your membership site.

May 16, 2008 - 5:16pm

Thanks for the kind words.

I have worked on some of the largest websites. Some of that experience is reflected in our training program, however every enterprise class website has unique issues which you spot during review, so some stuff is unique on each site.

Hi Aaron,

My name is Elle, and I'm a Website Manager for a brand new startup. Although I'm under NDA, I can tell you that I manage websites whose domain names are, well...recycled, for lack of a better term.

My career extends from the Microsoft Network (now known as MSN) in the mid-90s, to MSNBC.com, and on to media marketing companies, all the while learning about the Web and what makes it work -- from many perspectives. My mission in life is to understand what not only makes the web work, but what makes the Web work *well*. I'm a fan of Chip and Dan Heath (Made to Stick) and Steve Krug (Don't Make Me Think), whose ideas I try to apply whatever I do. This site will help to add depth to what I already know about SEO -- which isn't enough, in my opinion. Thanks for having such a great site, Aaron!

I'm Daymon, owner of PhoneTVInternet.com. SEO has always perplexed me, though I've had my successes with it. Don't ask me how, because I'm not even sure myself :) I was offered a nice hunk of change for my old website, and am currently in the start up stages of this new one. The marketing and "SEO" techniques I used to use aren't as effective as they were when I had my old site, so I'm looking forward to learning something new here :)

Hello Aaron,

I'm Jean-Michel, but let's make it Jim. I had my first experience with Mambo a few years ago, back in 2005 http://orchidees.hobby-fr.net. Last year, the mayor of my small village ask me to build a Web site which is http://www.maizeroy.net. I've then go for Joomla 1.5 and since then, I've spent most of my free time creating Joomla sites to help other peoples I knew. I really like a flexibility Joomla offers, it's simply fun.
I'm now interested in SEO techniques to give these sites a better visibility on the Web. Hope I will be learning nice things around here.
Kind regards,
Jim

Although I've been in the online marketing business for a number of years and have promoted myself as an SEO person, when I get to sites like this one I realize how much more I can learn.

My "specialty" is to help offline businesses use online marketing strategies more effectively - specifically to find their local target audience.

During the process I became real frustrated with what was out there that the average mom-and-pop could afford so I set out to create my own niche that they could use to find these all important prospects/customers. Recently finished, I am ready to put my product out to the US but have to now concentrate more on the SEO aspects.

The sites are called XploreLocal.com. There is one for every state and they are free for use. If any of your people want to visit their state's site it's found at http://xplorelocal.com/locations. (If you think this was wrong to say this here, I understand if you want to delete this part. I didn't mean to make this a commercial but wanted you to know what I'm doing.)

I'll be joining your community in the next couple of days (as soon as I get back to the office). Keep up the great work and loook forward to using your talents to improve my rankings for all of my sites.

Hi, Aaron. Name's Ross, I've been in Australia three years now, tidying up a few economic and financial strands before heading back home to New Zealand. The past month has given me much food for thought, particularly for re-igniting my passion for networking.
Introduced to an online club I have since investigated more networking/business sites in the past two weeks than the previous three years.
Always looking out for optimisation so it's time to get back in the game and learn something new, again. Yours seems to have high kudos so I feel I'm in good company.
Right now I'm driving a taxi, simply to avoid working and to gain air-con in the heat. In NZ I moved in commission sales industries, though it was always a struggle.
The ability now to build a secure financial base has opened the door on a small business idea, not to mention an explosion of possibilities, in other areas, capable with effective networking sites such as these.
2009 looks to be a great year.

Hi Aaron...
About 9 months ago, my company handed me the reins of their SEO project, after our previous SEO firm simply stopped working on our account (but still kept taking our money). They asked me to learn as much as I could about the topic, and wanted me to choose a book to start with. I did some serious research, and ended up deciding that your SEO Book would get me the info I needed to get up and running fast. Thanks for getting me started on this fascinating journey... I look forward to learning more from the community you've developed here.

Hello Aaron. Thanks for the opportunity to introduce myself.

My name is Matthew Wayne Selznick. I'm an author, podcaster, and social media consultant mostly working with other authors and creative people to help build their audiences and personal brands.

Since 1985, I've been creating and producing music, print and online periodicals and fiction according to my own interpretation of the DIY ethic. These principles led me to become one of the first podcasters in October of 2004 and one of the first podcast novelists a year later. Today, the DIY ethic informs my approach to social media.

A recognized authority in podcasting, I've been featured in "Tricks of the Podcasting Masters" (QUE) and other books and publications. I've spoken about new media and creative endeavors at the 2007 Podcast and New Media Expo as well as at Dragon*Con, BaltiCon, PodCamp West and several regional hobbyist groups. The podcast edition of my first book, "Brave Men Run -- A Novel of the Sovereign Era" is a world-wide fan favorite in the top ten at Podiobooks.com for more than three years running.

In November of 2005, "Brave Men Run -- A Novel of the Sovereign Era" became the first novel with an initial simultaneous release in print, several DRM-free e-book formats and free podcast editions. MP3 Audio CD, Kindle, iPhone and a new print edition from Swarm Press followed. Entirely driven by social media both online and off, the book enjoys a worldwide audience in excess of 30,000 fans and was an Amazon.com Top 100 Bestseller -- accomplishments that would have been highly unlikely for a first-time author using traditional publishing and marketing channels.

Today, in addition to continuing to offer my own fiction, music and other creative content in a variety of media, I work with new and established authors and other creative people to improve their online presence and build their personal brand. Recently, I was part of the team that conceived and executed a promotional campaign that pushed Random House author Scott Sigler onto the New York Times Hardcover Fiction bestseller list, making him the first author to do so thanks to social media techniques.

Thanks again for the opportunity!

Best,

Matthew Wayne Selznick

I apologize, I was scant on details and didn't address this to Aaron.

Hey Aaron, my name is Fernando and I'm an "in-between" jobs software sales guy. I started a blog while I was employed at my last company and got a good taste for SEO there, but am excited to join this community!

Hi Aaron,

My name is Dennis and I manage a free press release site called BriefingWire.com which is just a few months new. I've been trying to promote the site on my own which is what led me here and I should say that you have some great articles and videos for a marketing newbie. I do have a question that has to do with Google backlinks: I know I have some backlinks out there but my Google PR is still 0 - is this because my site is new and Google wants to see a history or does it have to do with the fact that the sites with backlinks have a PR < 4?

Anyway, great site. Keep up the good work.

Hi Dennis
Welcome to the site. The short answer to your question is that the Google Toolbar provides garbage incorrect data, particularly for new websites. More background on that here.

I'm an old dog but in time I intend to learn niche marketing inside out. I need to learn all the SEO I can as soon as I can to really have a hope of success as a niche marketer.

I need to make money marketing ASAP, so I am a motivated guy. I will pay for help as I can.

Patrick
April 5, 2009 - 6:18pm

I realize Im overdoing the replying to other peoples' posts thing a bit now (I promise Ill stop ;-)), but I feel like addressing this one:

If you need to make money ASAP, SEO might dissappoint you a bit, because it's not a quick process (even for somebody who already knows it all). People say SEO is a marathon not a sprint, which might sound cheesy, but it's somewhat true. If your site is completely new you shouldn't expect anything major traffic-wise during the first year.

SEO is definitely worth it, though...and youre at one of the best places on the internet to learn about it here...but if you need to make money ASAP (within your first year), you might want to consider trying to get some kind of other job on the side that pays the bills until your niche marketing projects pay for you (because chances are you wont make much money from it during your first year or so).

lawrencae
April 7, 2009 - 12:15pm

Patrick,

I understand that niche marketing in general is like long range marathon, much like a baseball season compared to a football season.

I need money ASAP because I want it ASAP. ASAP should be take literally for as soon as possible. In the case of niche marketing, 'soon' may not come for a while.

I really appreciate your pitching in to set me straight, in the event I was off course, on the realities of internet marketing.

For some people 'soon' comes sooner and for some it comes later.

Vielen Dank, mensch.

Hey Aaron, I'm Beth from Chicago.

I've been working in web design since about 1996, and have been focusing the last few years on SEO and usability.

While all my friends have moved on to the exciting world of social networks and mobile marketing, I've stayed in the SEO/SEM realm, realizing that if I'm not climbing the search results ladder, someone else is.

Working in B2B industrial products marketing, so the fancy new Web 2.0 (uggggh!!!!) stuff doesn't necessarily apply to my customers. Figured I should look to the web world for the training and tips I can't get in my own company.

Can't wait to pick up a few slick ones here.

Hi Aaron.

My name in Jayson but prefer to be called Jayse.

I am from Portland, Victoria, Australia and I am just starting a Web Design and Web Hosting Business from home and have joined SEO Training to learn more about SEO.

This is the first time for me to attempt to go out on my own and create websites and Web Hosting but I am just taking my time doing research into what I should charge, what other web designers are charging and how they set out their costs and basically researching other stuff before I register a business name and all that other stuff.

I hope I will learn heaps about SEO from SEO Training and get to know other people who enjoy Web Designing and Hosting.

May 11, 2009 - 7:11pm

Hi Aaron! My name is Brett and I guess I'm a jack of all trades - business analyst, database and web developer. I'm located in Harrisburg PA.

My focus right now is on www.b1231.com, a browser-based game site I programmed. I'm currently monetizing it through advertising. I want to learn more about SEO to build more traffic for that site.

I'm also interested in SEO for my web development business. SEO is often one of the first things asked about by my prospective clients. I usually downplay its value and suggest services like Adwords. To me, it doesn't seem possible to get to the top of the search engines other than in very unique niches. My goal is to find realistic SEO benefits that can be offered at a fair cost to clients.

May 11, 2009 - 7:47pm

Welcome to the site Brett. If I were to try to market game sites I would push widgets hard, and try to market the games like I would market art...go for word of mouth every way you can get it.
