Google as the Default Web Host

Google today announced that they bought JotSpot (a wiki company). They recently purchased YouTube (the largest online video site). They already own blogger. They run the default distributed automated ad platform (AdSense), are processing payments (Google Checkout), and provide one of the best free analytics products on the market. As Google worms their way onto more and more websites, and owns the platforms on which more and more media is consumed they are going to be able to create a much better web graph than competing companies.

Google will nearly immediately know what parts of the web are active, when they are active, how they are active, and why they are active. Tie that up with things like Gmail and Google Custom Search, and they have yet another way to see what people are referencing, looking for, and how quickly markets are growing. A big advantage over the competition for a company that is essentially an ad platform recommendation engine.

I think this is sort of scary...makes me think that google is out for global domination of the web or something

I've suspected for a while that Google's aim is not to index the web but to actually host it. Google Data is in someway an attempt to do this and Google Video adopts (adopted ? if it's dead already) the approch of hosting content not just indexing it.

Internet 2 could be Google hosting the vast majority of online data (text, images, video) and some of it being pay-to-view. Google will, generously, share the price paid with the original content provider.

All the bricks to build this are there, lying around the Google building site.

Here's how I look at Google.

What is Google?
A search engine.
Nope.

Google is a farm of computers that collectively act a giant computer.

So Google is a computer.

What do you do on a computer?
Well, you can run an application like search. Or run TV. Or do office applications, or read emails or play games or listen to music or whatever.

If Google is with everything I am using and used, it seems weird and scary stuff to be unfolded (and hopefully not like AOL).

does anyone feel google has grown too big for their own good? haven't people proven their distaste for big corporations monopolizing the market (eg. microsoft)? if google keeps up the good work, will they not become the next microsoft, if they are not already there, that will leave bad taste in peoples mouths. I've noticed many people expressing fear of googles potential and existing power.

"will they not become the next microsoft, if they are not already there"

Sort of. I'm not against Microsoft, but quality of Microsoft's and Google's services are huge, Google gives us excatly what we need with no bugs with no security issues, and both advanced and lame users have no problems using it.

But it's good to have an option, soon Google might become The One and then with no other options everything might become worse. We'll have Goonet instead of Internet.

Google gives us exactly what we need with no bugs with no security issues

Realistically I don't know how a person could say that with all their recent security issues and their endless stream of beta.

To my mind as long as Google continues to give people things they didn'tknow they needed 'til Google invented them. Then I'll be more than happy. If they do end up hosting most of the web, as long as it works, I'm happy.

As big as Google is, it's only as good as people think it is. If a better solution arrives, you'll probably find it via Google anyway.

Hmmm? google beginning to be like microsoft eh? how about google working with microsoft ?, now thats a very scary idea. As long a google plays its role as check and balance for microsoft and vice versa - i think things well be for ok for us.

So, are google going to out-AOL AOL then?

Which leaves others room to creep round the outside and the cycle begins again.

It's like a good story from a tabloid. "Google is establishing the New World Order". Thanks God that computers are not nearly intelligent as human beings.
