Upgrades Coming Soon(ish) :)
I already mentioned this to our subscribers & affiliates, but we are pausing the ability to subscribe to our membership site so we can perform upgrades.
We want to update Drupal, launch the new site design, and switch out the membership management software from what has become sorta big and hairy to a platform that is pre-packaged & thus more manageable. Doing this will allow us to accept payments on-site, offer a couple different tiers of access, allow me to segment some aspects of customer support to make some of the account management stuff easier to do by staff.
The end goal of this upgrade is to make the site look more modern & cohesive, and make it so we are spending more of our resources on creating new content & tools and less on management of the underlying software & such.
When we shifted to a membership site a couple years ago I didn't appreciate the level of success it would achieve & I didn't realize how some of the smaller bugs would become larger issues as our site grew. Most of those bugs have been fixed, but there are still a few ghosts & we are sorta limited by spending resources on re-creating the wheel, rather than buying wheels & then layering more value on top. :)
I still intend to be involved in the site daily, but for my health (and sanity) it really makes sense to leverage division of labor on some of the administrative stuff, rather than burning myself out trying to manage every aspect of everything. Our employees are great & now we just need to implement systems that help them be greater(er). :D
We are aiming to open back up sometime in mid-January. The blog and site will still continue, but given the number of databases the site currently has & how it syncs up with Paypal it is likely best for us to close off new subscriptions while we are changing stuff around.
We could try switching stuff while keeping everything active, but the big issue there is if any weird anomalies happen then that is probably more stress than I would care to deal with. I love the site & I want to keep it that way (vs pull my hair out due to putting too much stress on myself). :D
If you want to be notified when we re-open please comment on this post & we will email everyone who commented once we have relaunched under the new system & tested everything out. :)

If they granted the budget, get the dough before they take it away. Pay these guys in advance if need be - but lock it down. Had the same thing in my backyard.

I am glad to hear you finally making the upgrade. I enjoyed being a member and wanted to take some time off to focus on upgrading our site and also handling all the Christmas business we get. I have truly benefitted from your service and I saw how much you commented to my and other members posts, so I know you service your clients very well. You do need to have some time to spend with your lovely wife and to enjoy life. God made the world in 6 days and rested on the 7th for an example to us. I have looked in a lot of places and I can't find a single place that says how much? I've heard a lot of good things about SEO Book, but that raises a red flag for me.
The current rate is $300/month, but going forward we are planning on offering multiple tiers of access, with a couple tiers being significantly cheaper than that rate.

We were planning on offering a tier which includes the training subdomain + tools, but does not include access to the forums. The community forums are the most time extensive and resource limited portion of our site right now, precisely because it requires a ton of manual labor...I think I have made close to 25,000 posts in the forums.

All making a website free does is lower it's perceived value. It is EXCEPTIONALLY hard (if not impossible) to ask someone to pay for something you gave away to them for free. Price anchoring is a powerful concept & by pricing your stuff at $0 all you are doing is saying your stuff is worthless. In many cases for many folks that may be true (as there are a lot of folks who sell bunk untested internet marketing expertise), but our stuff is tested & works. I work too damn hard (and have for close to a decade straight) to consider my labors as having no value.
By themselves leads are essentially worthless to us. It is only converted customers who have any real value. We are too small of a company with too interactive of a service to hand-hold folks who haven't paid us a cent. Our paying customers expect more from us than that. And they get it too!

Just wonder what is happening with the site? I was lead all over the place all to find out that the site has no subscriptions? SEO Experts, yeah I would say sure... what about a migration plan from a Web Expert for Zero Down time. Just sayin...
I wasn't optimizing for zero downtime. I wanted to do a good job of getting all the infrastructure changed out. Also worth noting that on December 26th I got the flu and have been sick literally *every single day* that the site has been down. I have been so sick that some days I have slept over 21 hours.
I rarely get sick, but this time I got hit hard. And I am not willing to offer a bad customer experience to make a few more Dollars. I have worked too hard for too long on this site to change my approach at this point.
And opening the site back up is not just a matter of flicking a switch. I have to be able to work 16 to 20 hour days during the re-launch to ensure everything is working. That would be precisely impossible with my current health.

Good to know when the site is coming back (approximately). Personally I can't wait. Take care of yourself and get better...you're right, given that you're a pretty small shop if you launched before you were ready it would likely be a nightmare. Those of us that have been members for a while know the value of the site and can wait. I'd encourage any potential new members to be patient.

In that time, I can think of about a dozen things I specifically learned here, or was offered as a direct suggestion to fix something, where my immediate return paid for the membership fees for a year, two-to-threefold. I also am a webmaster and serve my own clients - and have landed enough work in the forums to pay for it for years. we were hoping for 16th or 17th of January, but I failed to realize how hard the Drupal 7 upgrade was (due to missing documents & broken modules). We are now shooting for the 1st of next month as a launch date.
Sorry to hear that you've been ill Aaron. I had flu over Christmas as well, as did my wife. I was OK after a few days, but my wife was in bed for a week. It hit my part of the UK pretty badly. A good friend's mother even died from it on Christmas day :(

It really looks like you do a good business here and I am very excited to join. When you guys do reopen are you going to have only the $300 plan or a $99 plan also?
When we fully relaunch we will have multiple price-points. That said, given that we are already super late with our relaunch we might first launch everything as it was before (in terms of one access level at one price point), and test the other tiers of access in the background & have those launched within the following week.
Thanks Aaron, I am also considering seomoz. I understand they are more about tools than about education although they do that also. Your focus is more on education than tools? Am I right? Is there an update on your release date? This is like being a kid waiting for Christmas, except you don't know the exact date you're going to get your presents.
We just started testing some of the user permissions issues with the membership management tool layered over the top of the core software. I believe we should have that testing wrapped up in ~ 3 to 4 days. That is the last remaining big hurdle. The reason I haven't been too forward with offering timing is I don't really fully control it & have wrongly estimated (quite badly) twice already, so I didn't want to rush to keep making promises then moving the goal poles. I really hate doing that. :(

We are nearing the end of our soft launch & should be fully publicly launched in a couple days.
If you don't want to wait you can always comment on this thread and I will try to get you a link right away, but flipping the switch to make all our sign up stuff publicly integrated with the site will take a few days, which is part of the reason we did a slow phased in launch, rather than just flipping the switch and having a flood of people come in while hoping that nothing is broke. We have already fixed a bunch of minor issues to help make the site flow smoother for members & are really close to doing a full on public launch.
I too am interested in joining. It's a bit annoying to go through the whole "pitch" page, decide you're interested and then hit this blog post instead!
