Myriad Search / Free Authority Finder Launched

Authority Finder is another free search tool created by my friend Mike.

I wanted to create a tool which cross compared the search results from the major search engines to find the most authoritative results for a query (hence the name authority finder).

After a bit of thinking about it I realized with a few tweaks the tool could also double as a meta search engine and sorta like a share of voice tool (although an incomplete share of voice tool as it does not factor in paid listings and there are a ton of variables that go into who searches for what where).

A beta of the tool exists at Myriad Search.com.

Currently Myriad works with the Yahoo! & Google APIs. It queries MSN's search RSS feeds, but will be shifted over to their API sometime today or tomorrow at the latest.

I do not believe Ask has an API. I have sent mutliple emails to Ask to see if it was ok to include their search in the tool and they have not yet responded. Most of the stuff on their TOS talked about commercial use, and this tool is totally free. If they are unhappy with the tool querying Ask I will quickly remove Ask from it.

I have not yet released the source code since I will be changing out the MSN piece today and I still am somewhat uncertain as to whether or not Ask will care, although I am hoping they think it is ok. If not they can email me at seobook@gmail.com.

In the tools section I posted more in depth information about the features of Authority Finder.

Please let me know what you think.

Is this an encoding thing?

Real nice. There are similar, but the simple interface and results are great. My preferred interface are "require" on GYM, and "exclude" on A. It really is amazing the lack of overlap on two- and three-word searches.

Hey Aaron!

your tool section rocks again ... man, you are releasing those tools like Google & Co are releasing their new products on an almost monthly if not weekly basis.... do you get any sleep still, or is your armada of "ghost-coders" growing so fast? :-)

Please let me know when it's ready to mirror that tool as well - I love it already...

September 17, 2005 - 2:02am

Aaron, just scrape Teoma - that's been Ask's answer whenever I query their reps. They don't mind as long as you don't scrape Ask direct.

September 17, 2005 - 2:52pm

Thanks for another great tool. I am ready to host a mirror when you release the source code.

This one took about 20 hours from start to finish.

Fantastic tool! Definitely gets a good review from me. Thanks.

May 3, 2006 - 10:10pm

You can search each engine up to 50 deep, but for most searches I did not think it was practical to show results beyond that depth...which for most queries adds up to somewhere like 100 to 150 results.

September 20, 2005 - 1:52pm

Great Aron, just will use it often....

This is a spectacular tool, really.

The only thing that would make it more valuable would be the ability to filter meta search results by domain.

I'd pay for that feature!

September 12, 2006 - 8:18am

Hi:

I really love this tool, it's esactly what I was looking for. Since the Yahoo limit queries to 5000 I'm trying to host it to run my own using my yahoo and google APIs but every time I do a search I got the following error:

Fatal error: Call to undefined function domxml_open_mem() in /home/mario/public_html/myriad/myriad.php on line 157

The line in questionn is this:

$dom = domxml_open_mem($site_results,DOMXML_LOAD_PARSING,$error);

If I comment out that line the search come up right, Google, MSN and ASK are ok but nothing in yahoo. The Yahoo column is empty same as Total results... only that engine, the others are ok.
I woud really appreciate some help to solve it. Sorry for posting here but I guess that this can be useful for others as well.

Keep up the god work!!

The Google search doesn't work.

September 23, 2005 - 1:50am

Hi Charles
the tool was featured in SearchDay today, so it got a bunch more use than normal. Google has the lowest API limit, so if the use is heavy on the day you have to insert your own Google API key after the first 1,000 queries.

This is a really cool tool. It would be great to be able to use the local versions of the engines (like Google.fr, yahoo.fr, etc.) instead of .com versions.

Looks good, but doesn't seem to work. Try the following and note that apparently Google and Yahoo never have results. There are also error messages printed at the beginning of the result page.

This is a great tool for comparing keyword visiblity across multiple search engines. It makes my job as a web manager much easier!

September 23, 2005 - 4:04pm

Hi Arno
I think the problem is that I did not prepare for the popularity of it to take off so quickly. The tool was in SearchDay recently, so it was seen by an amazing number of search fans. In time I will see if I can get the engines to ok extending the API limit. I just used it and Yahoo! worked. My guess is that in a day or two Google will work, or you can get Google to work right now if you enter your own Google API key

index.php and myriad.php are the same so it does not return results, while in the index.php there is the line of code: form action = myriad.php

I think it would be helpful if the URL were in a larger font - similar to Google results - so that it can be more readily seen and read, and not such a stress on the eyes.

Also, I spot checked the rankings against searches run on the search engines, and have been seeing different results. Are you trying to consistently pull accurate ranking numbers, or as you said, is it going to be impossible to get the rankings correct?

Thanks - I hope the kinks get worked out, because this tool would save me lots of time if it were consistently accurate.

What api key limitations do each of the 4 big search engines have in place for this search tool?
I have been getting different stories and currently know the following, Yahoo 5000 search limitation and Google 1000 search limitation.

How can this limitation be surpassed?

Hi Rachel

>I hope the kinks get worked out, because this tool would save me lots of time if it were consistently accurate.

The kinks aren't on my end (unless they say it is ok to scrape their SERPS).

I can't force the search engines to place the same results in the API as their regular results, but if they do not make the APIs useful people will not use them.

Cool Banannas as one of my clients likes to say. I would be very interested in purchasing the source code if its available to buy and not to expensive of course. You have my email address from the post so hope to hear from you to say yeah or nay.

Either way great Job dude, keep up the good work.

Hi,

I'm Aman, webmaster of www.redalkemi.com.

I liked your tool http://www.myriadsearch.com/ and permanently added it to my collection of "World's best Webmaster & SEO Tools" list at www.redalkemi.com/web-tools.php. This collection of tools is also prominently mentioned on our site's home page (see right column).

I would like it if you can give a nice link back to our site, but even if you do not, we will keep your link on this page as your tool is really good.

P.S. I'm real flesh-n-blood person, not a link-bot. I eat real food (preferably tasty but low-fat), play guitar, love to quiz and would be happy to answer your emails too :-)
I'd also be happy to send you info about how you can link to us, if you like.

Cheers!!!

I am interested to know why Text "®" appears...

Sure....its what I find a bit pointless with G, Y!, etc...that after the first say 40 results, results get a bit irrelevant....superb tool

"®" is this to do with UTF??? Ansii??

This tool looks great. But when I downloaded all the pages and renamed them as instructed and ran in on my local server,
no result page was displayed.

Am I missing something?
I used the Google API key on the myriad.php file and copied it to the index.php file. If anyone has had a similar problem before and resolved it, please do help me out.

I think it is because the tools use PHP4...and most servers use PHP5 now. The tools need to be recoded.

Conceptually, I like the tool. The problem is the results.
Takes a LONG time and usually does not return all results.

Any plans to upgrade the tool?

October 27, 2008 - 9:54am

Google essentially killed their API. But they promise RSS feeds of search results soon. When those are made available the tool will probably be rebuilt again.

February 4, 2013 - 5:06pm

Can you please tell me what is the difference between "require"and "default" option???

February 5, 2013 - 12:38am

... is that "require" means that a result MUST be ranked within that search engine's result set to be part of the final search results, whereas "default" is an average sum rank across search engines.

Part of the reason we stopped running it was due to limited usage, but another reason was that 2 of the 4 search options (Yahoo! & Ask) essentially folded their search options, and we didn't see as much value/purpose in having a meta search of 2 search engines. In the years since then there has been the launch of Blekko, DuckDuckGo & Yandex's US search, but we didn't feel enough usage was there to make sense to reprogram it.
