The Cheapest & Easiest Way to Create a Wordpress Template

Today while walking through a mall to buy a penguin suit I noticed a guy wearing a backpack that had a pole above it with a LCD making weird noises pitching some marketing junk at me. In a world that saturated with marketing, offering value and speaking openly is one of the cheapest and fastest ways to gain authority.

Blogs are not good for every site, and they are not good for every person, but writing one opens you up to a wide array of links and that would otherwise likely remain unavailable. Blogging also helps you visualize what ideas are spreading, why they are spreading, who is important to know to help spread ideas, and how they were marketed to spread. If you know what ideas are spreading, why they are spreading, and who is spreading them then it gets much easier to create ideas that spread and ensure they spread. I recently had another site designed and wanted to add a blog to the site. I went over to Themespress, spent $10 and 10 minutes and got a Wordpress theme design that matched my original site. If you are in a market with lots of conversation and find your site lacking in the authority needed to compete it might be worth trying out blogging. If you decide it doesn't work for you then you really are not out that much for giving it a try.

Josh,

Wpthemegen worked great, but when I try it with the newest wordpress (2.2.2) it says my version of wordpress is too old.

I got it to work by commenting the following out of the header.php file in the wpthemegen directory:
//if(function_exists('language_attributes')) {
// language_attributes();
//}else{
// echo "Oops:This theme only works with WordPress 2.1.*. You seem to have an outdated version of wordpress. Please download the latest WordPress to use this theme and also get latest security patches.";
// exit();
//}

Great work!

Michael:
You can install wordpress in any directory you want. If you want it to be at www.mysite.com/blog, then you install in in the /blog/ folder. but if you want it on www.mysite.com, then you just install it in the root folder. It'll work either way. It just depends on where you put the files on your web server.

Michael:

you can install wordpress anywhere in your site, just use:

php chdir('WP INSTALLATION'); require('wp-blog-header.php');

at the top of each page.

"Maybe ;) I am having a big wedding in about a month, but it's overseas."

For Real????? If so, congrat's!

Hope to meet you both at PubCon, if you're going this year. Thanks for your awesome contribution to the SEO field.

For Those looking for more information about WordPress ...
WordPress.com has info about the free blog version. WordPress.org is where you can download a version of WP to use as or in your own site.
The online manual is called the Codex and can be fornd here. http://codex.wordpress.org

There is also a great annual event that I went to in San Francisco last month ago called WordCamp. WP creators, developers and users get together for this two day event. It was a small group of people and sold out very quickly. Aaron your name was on the list but I didn't see you there?

Hello:

First off, love your site.

Second, I was wondering if you could comment on Wordpress a little bit more. I have not investigated it yet, but how do people set up a Wordpress to not go to a blog, but to the website domain they've bought. One example to explain more of what I'm talking about is www.itchmo.com

I'd like to do the same thing, just don't know how.

Anyway, thanks for your site, it's great information and I've applied info. from here on my site...which I will not post here because that's spam, and I don't spam due to Karma constraints:)

Hi Graywolf
Maybe ;) I am having a big wedding in about a month, but it's overseas.

Hi Michael
Two real easy ways:

  • After you install Wordpress at mysite.com/blog, you can view the output HTML of that page or an individual post page, then copy that HTML to an index file at mysite.com and write whatever you want there.
  • There is a setting inside of Wordpress to pick one of the Wordpress pages as the homepage.

Josh,

Thanks for the link to wpthemegen. I used it to create a new template for my blog in about 3 minutes. Of course, I did spend about 3 hours making some changes and adding a few extras.

If I add a nice header, I'll be so cooooool. :)

Themespress is not the easiest product to use. I tried using it for one of my sites and it comes out broken. Willing to pay the $100 to have them do it for me, but, after one email, they really didn't get back to me.

I guess if you the cost is $10, the value is $10.

Need other options.

It worked for me. But I guess it is not for everyone.
