Very good Aaron, nice article. I started out with nothing, and now I'm ranked number 8 for the keyword website design and have many other traffic getting keywords coming up in the search engines.
This hole last week, I have gotten a phone call on websites - large ones php development at a min of 5k, and seo clients wanting to invest around 5k-20k a month.
Hi Aaron
You make an interesting comment in the article that if you were starting today in SEO I would make sure my stuff was syndicated to WebProNews. I havhe looked all over WebProNews for information about how to do this. Can you explain this tactic further?
Thanx
David
That's one of the more useful round-table articles I've read.
Hi David
I think the submit an article link in their page footer that links to this submission form works.
I found it interesting that two of the authors recommended spending $300 on a yahoo directory submission. Do you feel that the yahoo directory is still useful? Say I've got $500 start up budget for a site, it seems a big chunk to submit to Yahoo!
I just submitted another site there. But I am spending $1,000 on links right now, and spent about the same amount on content and design too.
Well, I don't think it is that easy. With no money and without knowledge, you only have one possibility to be a genius.
Without money, you wouldn't have time either. You have to do something to pay your apartment and what you are eating.
To get an Expert in any mater needs time, much time, and you don't have to forget that there are many others out there which already start some years before you, and have money.
I have read your book and I think your story is an exception. Not many people have the capacity/ability to do what you did with your life, and probably, neither the luck.
You have been in the right place, at the right moment and did the right things, a probably you are a genius.
I hope everybody understand my spanglish ;-)

Same comment I put on the SEOmoz post about starting with $100.
Unless your unemployed - time is money, so at $10 per hour (that's assuming you're very poor) that gives you 10 hours to work on promoting your website and a budget of $0. If you spend X thousands of hours of promoting your site, you spent LOTS of money on it (at least money you could have earned if you spent that same amount of time working instead).
I hate how all the "free" this and cheap ways to do this don't take in consideration time. "How to market a website and gain traffic if you have a butt load of time and no upfront capitol" would have been a more accurate title.
Aaron I understand your motivation behind removing the URL submission box, but it's important that my name be referenced to my blog so people can read more about me and what I think if they want to.
How about adding a non linked version of the url, so at LEAST people can see which address to visit to find more information about the commenter? What do you think?
I also added "of companyurl.com" to the name field. That way there is no wasted link but it accomplishes that purpsoe.
What are your thoughts?
I started my comment with
One guys said "good content & good links" Wish he would have explained it.
By the way do not pay $7.00 a month to host one domain. I host 6 for that amount at http://www.mabushosting.com. If you have one domain try Godaddy's econ plan. $2.77/month when purchased for 24 months.
No Link back to my website?
@Tyler Dewitt -
#8 for web design? On google, that is Wikipedia, for me... lol
