Affiliate Conversion Rate by Ad Format

For a while I didn't realize that my affiliate software program tracked affiliate conversions by ad format. I have had a good number of affiliate sales since then ;)

By far and away the top converting affiliate format is text links using whatever the publisher wants in a text link. Other than that the general trend is the smaller the ad size is the better it converts. Once you go below 100x100 the conversion rates drop off a bit, but anywhere from 100x100 to 350x250 does great. The traditional banner sized ads and exceptionally large ads do not convert well, perhaps because they alert a part of the brain that says "I am trying to sell you crap".

What affiliate ad formats do you find most effective? Have you noticed any recent changes in conversion trends based on ad format?

I've found that my text links don't perform well at all. My enhanced displays from Amazon do very well and have a conversion rate of 10%.

I've only recently been looking at affilate opportunites and have been viewing the performance of a range of ads based on their previous history. Just as you said Aaron, a number of ads that produced the best returns were the link text or smaller block ads. I haven't done alot of experimentation myself however I am currently trialing some ads on a project site of mine and monitoring the results.

Hello everyone!

I certainly am a woman (LOL) but can't really get the rationale behind the use of smaller ads such as plain text links rather than those banners or images.

A picture paints a thousand words what about text?

The reason why I am pointing this out is not to totally disagree with you guys but to seek for the right decision. I am also an affiliate marketer but most of the time I prefer banners/logos/images than text links or micro codes.

Is there any significant difference with regards to sales or traffic or clickthoughs in using smaller links than using bigger or more conspicuous ones?

I agree the smaller sizes do well, but you have to factor in placement. Location, location, location is still number one.... and if you ask most women and get a truthful answer - SIZE DOES MATTER!
