Google Trends - Kick Ass!
Google extends their lead in the keyword research market by adding a new tool called Google Trends. It operates similar to the Google keyword research tool, but offers trends that goes back for years, and even overlaps news related to keyword search spikes, like Google Finance does. Many of the links they provide are to cheesy press releases, so that might present another marketing opportunity.
The tool also shows top cities, regions, and languages that queries occurred in. They also allow you to set timeframes and the market location.
It also allows you to compare phrases.
The only downsides to Google Trends are that it only works for broad terms and does not give exact numbers.

Disappointingly it does not give a numerical value to the data, so you cannot assume the relationship between two different searches. However you can see the data from several search terms by seperating them with comas "term1, term2".
I tried a test set on my site with screen shots Google Trends SEO on blondes vs brunettes just for the fun of it and Google adjusts the graph to best present each search. This means that to compare data it must be in the same search result.
Thanks for this Aaron. It's awesome discovering cool things at Google labs. I agree with your assessment. The tool is cool, but specific metrics would be a nice addition - especially for those who are researching keywords.

Google Trends is great for geotargeting information. If you are selling solar panels online you can find out what cities search for "solar panels" more frequently and target your ad campaigns to those cities.
2 questions, why is the field read-only, same with this comments page...must be a problem with my recent upgrade in FireFox.
I could see how you might be able to use this for local search information and planning. Numbers would be nice:)
