Installing Our Other SEO Extensions
Firefox dramatically changed how they handle extensions and the underlying architecture of their extension platform to try to make their extensions more in-line with extensions for Google Chrome.
While we have supported these other extensions for over a decade, we have not yet ported them over to the new format. If you want to use the other extensions then we would recommend using Waterfox, a web browser which is based on the older Firefox core that still supports the legacy extension architecture which was used to build our extensions.
Step #1: Install the Waterfox Web Browser
The installation instructions are convoluted, because our extensions were originally created for Firefox, but Mozilla chased Google Chrome & killed toolbars when they launched their Firefox Quantum release. Given that our toolbar was our most popular extension, a browser which does not support toolbars no longer makes sense for a toolbar extension!
Thus we recommend using the Waterfox web browser, which still supports the old extension framework.
Please download & install the Waterfox web browser & then come back to this page while using that web browser.
- While our extensions were originally created for the Firefox web browser around a decade ago (and survived about a decade of browser updates by being frequently updated over the years), the Firefox 57 update killed any extension using toolbars. Thus we now recommend using Waterfox for continued extension use.
- install the Waterfox web browser & add our extensions to it
- once the browser is installed come back to this page using Waterfox
- our extensions were originally created for Firefox, but after Firefox lost marketshare to Chrome they stopped supporting toolbars & their old extension framework, which is still supported by Waterfox
- install the Waterfox web browser & add our extensions to it
Why Waterfox?
Our extensions were originally built for Firefox, but on the 57th version of Firefox the update killed off any extension using a toolbar. This in turn meant all our extensions need to be rewritten from the ground up. Initially we thought this might take a few days, but it has been an ugly process & looks like it will take months. There's no useful documentation provided by Mozilla and incremental Firefox updates strip away weeks of work at a time.
All our extensions still work in Waterfox, which was built on the Mozilla framework & supports older extensions.
Prefer Mozilla Firefox?
If you prefer Firefox to Waterfox, you can install an old version of Firefox. Keeping in mind that version 57 kills our updates, so if you have other extensions which require Firefox 57 or higher to use then you would be better off using Watefox for SEO research & using Firefox as your regular web browser without our SEO extensions in it.
Here are links to install version 56.0.2 of Mozilla Firefox for 32 bit Windows, 64 bit Windows, Mac & Linux computers. And here is the FTP directory from Mozilla listing all their major historical releases so you can find alternative versions if the above linked ones don't work for you.
Please keep in mind that if you install an older version of Firefox you will need to disable software updates on that web browser to prevent the browser updates from killing our extensions. And it is also worth mentioning that older web browsers may have security bugs in them, so it would not be advisable to visit sites in shady categories that often distribute malware like pornography, warez or other piracy promoting sites.

Configuration
SEO for Firefox can be turned on or off globally.
- If it is gray it is off.
- If it is colorful it is on.
In addition, each particular piece of information also has three settings
- Auto - automatically pulls in the data whenever you search Google or Yahoo!
- On-Demand - link to pull in data will be present in search results, but the data will not be automatically pulled in until you click on the associated link
- Hidden - if you do not find a particular data point useful you can remove that data point from the tool output.
By default most of the tool features are in the On-Demand state (not on Auto). This is done to ensure that those who would most likely be abusive users (by not following our usage tips) will be unable to use the tool to its full capability since they would not read these instructions on how to change the settings.
